The anime features Yasuyuki Oishi as director, with Fumito Yamada as assistant director, Yoshiki Okusa as lead writer and Yu Yoshiyama as character designer for the Studio KAI production.

The original manga ran in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1993 to 1999. Its previous anime adaptation premiered in 1996 and ran for 49 episodes, and there was also a live-action TV drama and a PlayStation game.

As of July 2024, the series—including spinoffs—boasted over 29 million copies in circulation. Back in 2019, the series was among those that anime fans in Japan felt deserved a remake.
