One Piece Luffy Actor Iñaki Godoy Tours Shueisha Publishing

The August 31 premiere of Netflix’s live-action One Piece is drawing ever closer, and the Netflix Japan YouTube shared a video of Luffy actor Iñaki Godoy touring Shueisha, the company that publishes Shonen Jump magazine and the One Piece manga.

The video is about three minutes long, and includes Godoy playing with One Piece plushes, getting to see the real copy of the very first chapter of the manga (which was published before he was born), and wearing a straw hat. It’s interspersed with clips from the Netflix show.

At one point he meets editor-in-chief Hiroyuki Nakano. They shake hands, Godoy bows, and then the actor says what an honor it is to play Luffy. Through a translator, Nakano says to Godoy, “You are the real Luffy.” Godoy, clearly touched, hugs Nakano in response.

“What I really like about One Piece is it just has so many messages about dreams and friendship and courage,” Godoy said.

He also told the people working at Shueisha, “The work you all do is amazing, and I am so honored to be here with you guys. I will always do my best to make you all proud and share One Piece and joy and friendship and courage with the entire world.”

VIZ Media publishes One Piece and gave this description for the first volume (part of which we see in the video above):

As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer “Red-Haired” Shanks. But his life changed when Luffy accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber…at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure…one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…
