Nintendo previously announced plans to close up the eShops for the Wii U and 3DS systems, and now we have an official date for the shutdown of both. Following up on earlier news of a March 2023 window, Nintendo confirmed that the specific closing date will be March 27, 2023 in the west.
The ability to use prepaid cards to add money to the Wii U and 3DS eShops will stop on August 29, but those who load them up prior to that day will be able to use their funds until March 27. At the same time as the eShop closes, players will no longer be able to purchase content through StreetPass Mii Plaza, the Theme Shop and Nintendo Badge Arcade.
As for general online functionality, Nintendo plans to keep it going for the “foreseeable future,” and players will still be able to re-download digital games, updates and DLC after March 27. Subscription services like Pokémon Bank will be free after the eShop closes.
Fire Emblem Fates is the only major game that will go offline earlier than others, with the last day of sales set for February 28, 2023. DLC will be available until March 27.
