One Piece began in 1997, and its one hundredth volume will go out on September 3. Japan is in the mood to celebrate, and One Piece is getting all sorts of ways to enjoy the milestone, including having 100 One Piece taxis in Tokyo. Japan’s Mainichi Newspapers are getting in on the action with the “The Mainichi World Economic Journal” special edition, with help from publisher Shueisha.
The title is a nod to One Piece’s World Economic Newspaper. The paper will offer a number of things, including following One Piece from its humble beginnings to where things are now with the Wano Country Arc.
In addition to that, the paper will give out character profiles, offer up character charts and even give a timeline. There will be more data on the One Piece 100 We Are One project. The Mainichi says that this special edition will be written and designed in a way to entertain both grownups and children, and that it’s not just for the most passionate of fans. (Though surely the most passionate will have to get this.)
The journal debuts on September 3, the same day as the 100th volume of manga. It will be sold in stores in the Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama prefectures, though it’s also available to preorder online here. Note: the site is in Japanese. The price is 490 yen, so it’s a little under $5, and this includes tax but not shipping and handling.
One Piece is published in America by VIZ Media, who gave this description of the bestselling series:
“Join Monkey D. Luffy and his swashbuckling crew in their search for the ultimate treasure, the One Piece.”
And don’t forget: whether it’s a time to celebrate One Piece or not, there’s always the option of getting married One Piece style, with a One Piece dress and all.
