After about twenty years of sitting comfortably in the record books as the #1 movie at the Japanese box office, Spirited Away was replaced by the smash hit Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. However, until recently, Spirited Away was still the number one Japanese film worldwide.
Well, that is no longer the case. Anime News Network explained, “The film [Demon Slayer] has earned the equivalent of more than US$399.18 million from these territories [South Korea, Taiwan , Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Vietnam] alone. This total pushes it past the current US$383,397,782 worldwide box office total of Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away . . .”
And Demon Slayer still have other places where it’s yet to hit theaters, including the United States. The first opportunity Americans will have to see Demon Slayer on the big screen will be this Friday at the Landmark Theatre in Coral Gables, Florida.
