Final Fantasy XVI, the next game in the popular RPG series, is on its way.
Developer Square Enix has officially announced the game and dropped its first trailer. It’s also revealed that the game will initially be available on two platforms: PC and PlayStation 5, where it’ll be a console exclusive. Sorry, XBoxers.
Like most of the games in the main Final Fantasy line (aside from XI and XIV), it’ll be a single-player RPG, though it appears to be on the action-y side.
The trailer features the plenty of tasty tidbits to whet our appetites, including a noble boy named Joshua, the sword-wielding man sworn to protect him, giant beasties called Icons, and the message “the legacy of the crystals has shaped our history for long enough.” It also shows off some in-game footage courtesy “a PC emulating the PS5 experience.”
The game is produced by Square Enix’s Creative Business Unit III. Its producer is Naoki Yoshida, and its director is Hiroshi Takai. Yoshida produced and directed Final Fantasy XIV, while Takai directed the PC version of Last Remnant.
In comments today, Yoshida said the game is being produced by “an unusually small team.”
The announcement came alongside details of the PS5’s launch date and price.
