At the recent Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair, voice actors Kengo Kawanishi, who plays Augus Mikazuki, and Natsuki Hanae, who plays Biscuit Griffon (Gundam character names are the gift that keeps on giving) in the new series Iron-Blooded Orphans, shared some thoughts on the franchise.
Kawanishi first got into Gundam with the series G-Gundam, which was on-air when he was a kid. As someone who was aware of the huge cultural weight of the franchise, he couldn’t quite believe it when he learned that he’d been cast in the latest version.
On the other hand, Hanae hadn’t watched a ton of Gundam. Instead, his main experience with the series came from video games, especially Mobile Suit Gundam Z: AEUG vs. Titans.
Regarding playing Griffon, Hanae mentioned that he’s the kind of character who doesn’t get angry, so he needs to be played with gentleness. Kawanishi mentioned a tough point of playing Mika is differentiating between “gloomy” and “cool.”
Finally, both actors remarked on the great atmosphere in the recording studio, which is filled with both new and veteran voice actors.
To finish off, Hanae praised his fellow voice actor, saying “Kawanishi sounds really cool during battles, so you’ll definitely enjoy it!”
