How Super Robot Wars Altered Giant Robot Anime

Super Robot Wars has led to some massive changes in the world of giant robot anime!

With Super Robot Wars Y on the way to consoles this summer, fans can once again lead their favorite anime robots into battle. As we look after the new game’s roster, we’re catching sight of some interesting choices. The new game will unite ‘bots old and new—and showcase the effect the series has had on anime!

Take a look at these three contributions to the wider world of anime via Super Robot Wars. Best of all, all three will be in the upcoming game!

More Screen Time for Mobile Suit Variations

Gundam MSV

Super Robot Wars doesn’t just pull from anime for its robot titles. It also pulls from manga like Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam and light novels like Hakaiou GaoGaiGar VS Betterman. But it doesn’t stop there: sometimes it even brings free-floating concepts into the game! For example, Mobile Suit Variation: a 1983-1984 series of design variants from Mobile Suit Gundam‘s One Year War.

While some of these variations have already made their way into series like Zeta Gundam and Gundam Unicorn, the SRW games give players a chance to really look at and get to know these units. The games have always been very Gundam-heavy. And, frankly, Mobile Suits are a great way to fill out squads and offer long-range support. It’s great to see these variations given new life and to have a chance to command them in battle.

Legs for Gekkoei

Gekkoei Sui

In Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection, Lelouch and C.C. used the Gekkoei to rescue Nunnally. There was just one problem: It wasn’t finished yet! The Knightmare Frame had no legs and limited armaments. But that wasn’t the case in Super Robot Wars 30. In the 2021 game, we see an updated version of the bot: the Gekkoei Sui.

Code Geass mechanical designer Akira Yasuda designed the completed Gekkoei at the behest of SRW series producer Takanobu Terada. Gekkoei Sui will also be appearing in Y, meaning we’ll once again get to see what a completed Gekkoei can do!

A Souped-Up Mazinger

Mazinkaiser

It is the fate of any great mentor to see their mentees surpass them. Such is the case with Mazinger Z in the Super Robot Wars franchise. For 1971, Maz was a force to be reckoned with. It was the first robot with an on-board pilot, and it was the first of the super robots. But as the decades have worn on, newer shows have made the once-mighty mech look a little small on its own field.

To fix this, Dynamic Pro got together and upgrade Mazinger into Mazinkaiser. First appearing in 1998’s Super Robot Wars F Final, Kaiser went from being an evolved Mazinger to his own unique unit. It’s even got its own anime now—showing how SRW gives back to the shows it features!

Super Robot Wars Y goes on sale August 28.
