The Japanese paper The Mainichi reports that anime studio Ufotable Inc. and its president Hikaru Kondo have been indicted for crimes related to their taxes. The Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau originally filed their complaint in February of 2020.
According to the allegations, Kondo and Ufotable Inc cheated on their taxes in 2014-2018. Altogether, they avoided paying 137 million yen (about $1.2 million) in corporate and consumption taxes. Allegedly Kondo hid some of the money at a safe in his home. The indictment has been passed down by the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office.
Ufotable put out a statement saying they have taken care of the money owed. The company is the producer of the very successful Demon Slayer anime.
