Super Mario Bros. Film (No, Not That One) Gets Screenings in Japan

Super Mario Bros. Film (No, Not That One) Gets Screenings in JapanThis ain’t no game: it’s a live-action thrill ride. Super Mario Bros., the much maligned, highly underrated 1993 film based on the video game series, will be shown in theaters across Japan for its 30th anniversary.

The screenings, ostensibly inspired by the success of that other Super Mario Bros. movie (yawn), will feature a new 4K remaster of the film, which—I just learned this—is called Super Mario: Makai Teikoku no Megami (The Goddess of the Demon Empire) in Japan.

A new poster has been designed for the rerelease, and it is hot hot hot.

The film stars Bob Hoskins as Mario, John Leguizamo as Luigi and Dennis Hooper as Koopa, and tells the tale of two Brooklyn plumbers who get sucked into a dystopian alternate dimension in which dinosaurs, rather than mammals, evolved into humanlike beings. It’s, uh, hard to describe how much I like this movie.

Screenings start September 15.
