When it comes to the next entry in the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film series, it was always a matter of when. Plans for a third movie were previously revealed, and now we know that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set to open in theaters on December 20, 2024.

This is all after the first two Sonic the Hedgehog films blazed trails for success in the world of video game movie adaptations. Directed by Jeff Fowler and starring Ben Schwartz, James Marsden and Jim Carrey, the first entry opened on January 25, 2020 to become the most successful video game based movie at the time. Both it and its sequel—which premiered on March 30, 2022—have pulled in a combined $721,588,587 globally since their debut.
