This past weekend marked the opening of Shin Ultraman, directed by Shinji Higuchi and written by Hideaki Anno. The team previously brought the magnificent Shin Godzilla into the world, and their latest tokusatsu throwback managed to top the Big G’s opening weekend.
The first three days saw Shin Ultraman pulling in 993,410,050 yen (about US$7.68 million) from 641,802 tickets sold. 2016’s Shin Godzilla made 825 million yen over the course of its first three days. The new Ultraman also managed to beat the total box office of 2008’s Superior Ultraman 8 Brothers, which was the previous top-grossing theatrical entry for the series.
The true test will be the box office total for Shin Ultraman‘s full run, so we’ll have to wait and see how the film manages to do while it’s in theaters.
