The opening sequence is on full display for the Kitaro Tanjo: Gegege no Nazo anime film, which opened in Japan on November 17. While it doesn’t have subtitles, the video from the official website and the Toei Movie Channel on YouTube offers a nice look at the first few minutes of the feature.
When the film opened in Japan it earned ¥160,106,620 (about US$1.07 million) in its first three days, ultimately closing out at ¥1,150,040,030 (about US$7.89 million).
The staff for the film includes director Gou Koga (Gegege no Kitaro: Nippon Bakuretsu!!), screenwriter Hiroyuki Yoshino (Macross Frontier) and character designer Touko Yatabe (storyboards and key animation for the 2018 Gegege no Kitaro anime).
Shigeru Mizuki’s Hakaba Kitaro manga, the origin of the the series, kicked off way back in 1959, and has been adapted into many anime series and films since. This particular film celebrated the 100th birthday of the late Mizuki.
Here’s how Crunchyroll describes the 2018 series:

When a number of unexplainable phenomena plague adults of the human world with confusion and chaos, thirteen-year-old Mana writes a letter to the Yokai Post in search of answers, only to be greeted by Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro.
