New GeGeGe no Kitaro Film Headed to Screens in Fall 2023GeGeGe no Kitaro, the long-running franchise based on the manga by Shigeru Mizuki, is getting a new film.

Titled Kitaro Tanjo: GeGeGe no Nazo (Kitaro’s Birth: The GeGeGe Mystery), it’ll star the cast of the 2018 GeGeGe no Kitaro anime series.

Staff revealed so far include:

Director: Gou Koga (Gegege no Kitarō: Nippon Bakuretsu!!)
Screenwriter: Hiroyuki Yoshino (Macross Frontier)
Character designer: Touko Yatabe (GeGeGe no Kitaro 2018 storyboards, key animation)

The poster for the film shows Kitaro’s father, and reads “the man of the ghost clan is here…”

Mizuki’s Hakaba Kitaro manga, the origin of the the series, kicked off way back in 1959, and has been adapted into many anime series and films since. This film will celebrate the 100th birthday of the late Mizuki.

Nearly twenty years into the 21st century, people have forgotten the existence of Yokai. When a number of unexplainable phenomena plague adults of the human world with confusion and chaos, thirteen-year-old Mana writes a letter to the Yokai Post in search of answers, only to be greeted by Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro.
