Rick and Morty Is Getting an Official 10-Episode Anime

There have been several Rick and Morty anime shorts, but Adult Swim has announced it’s now going to do a Rick and Morty anime series. Conveniently called Rick and Morty: The Anime, it’s been greenlit for ten episodes.

It’s going to be helmed by Takashi Sano, the director of Tower of God, who has also done the Adult Swim anime shorts “Rick and Morty vs. Genocider” and “Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil)”. It’s being made by the Japanese animation studio Telecom Animation Film.

Deadline reports that Rick and Morty: The Anime will be kept separate from the original Rick and Morty, though they’re not going to be completely different, as the anime is meant to “adapt themes and events from the original title.”

As this is just being announced, there is not a whole lot of information available yet, including when the anime might debut. We do know that it’s in production, and that when it comes out, fans will be able to watch it on both Adult Swim and HBO Max.

The first Rick and Morty short anime was “Samurai & Shogun” from 2020, and Otaku USA interviewed its writer and director, Kaichi Sato. He said this about working on the project:

“This project was not just simply about adapting Rick and Morty into the Japanese style, but instead my aim was more to express the hybrid of Japanese and American animation and made efforts with the staff to do so.

First, I watched and reviewed all the episodes of Rick and Morty and the original and movie version of Lone Wolf and Cub and pulled out the details I wanted to use to write the overall composition and screenplay.

Then, I drew the rough draft of each of the cuts. After that was what you would call the animation work process from storyboard on by DEEN DIGITAL. However, there were many unprecedented endeavors such as expressions that involved bloodshed, the overall color tone, the light source setting, sound effects, etc. and it became a series of trial and errors until the end.”
