Pompo the Cinephile Movie Lines Up North American Screenings

GKIDS announced the acquisition of another anime film, this time in the form of the North American rights to Pompo the Cinephile. The debut feature from anime studio CLAP, with direction by Takayuki Hirao, is set to make its way to theaters in Japanese and English—with both subtitled and dubbed options available—sometime in 2022.

Pompo the Cinephile is based on the manga by Shogo Sugitani. Other staff members on the adaptation include character designer Shingo Adachi and art directors Takafumi Nishima and Miu Miyamoto.

An official website is now live, so stay tuned for more details on when exactly the film will premiere in North America.

GKIDS describes the movie:

Pompo is a gutsy B-movie producer in “Nyallywood.” One day Pompo tells her apprehensive assistant Gene that he will direct her next script: a drama about a creative genius starring the legendary actor Martin Braddock and a young actress seeking her first break.

But when the production heads towards chaos, can Gene succeed as a first-time director?

POMPO THE CINEPHILE is a rollicking ode to the power of movies, and the joys and heartbreak of the creative process, as a new team devotes their lives to create a “masterpiece.”
