We may all still be formulating our opinions after seeing the first trailer for the live-action One Piece series, but one thing’s for certain: It’s going to sound very authentic in Japanese! The main cast from Netflix’s series came through with another announcement at Anime Expo 2023, revealing that Japanese VA Mayumi Tanaka will be voicing Luffy and joining the Japanese dub cast along with the rest of the main cast from the anime.

Watch as live-action Luffy Iñaki Godoy meets anime Luffy Mayumi Tanaka in the video below.

We’ll have to wait to find out how Matt Owens and Steve Maeda’s One Piece performs in live-action form. Eiichiro Oda’s original manga is available in English through VIZ Media, which describes the epic yarn like so:

As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer “Red-Haired” Shanks. But his life changed when Luffy accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber…at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure…one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…
