Masaaki Yuasa’s Latest Film, Kimito Namini Noretara, Gets Main Cast

Kimito Namini NoretaraThe director behind Ping Pong, Devilman Crybaby and more is back this year with his latest film, tentatively titled Kimito Namini Noretara (tentatively titled If I Could Ride The Wave With You or Riding a Wave With You in English).

Now we know who will be playing the film’s two main characters, Minato Hinageshi and Hinako Mikaimizu.

Minato, a firefighter, will be played by Ryota Kayayose, a member of male pop group Generations from Exile Tribe. This is the first anime role for Kayayose, who played the lead in 2017 film Ani ni Aisaresugite Komattemasu (My Brother Loves Me Too Much).

Hinako, a college student who loves surfing, will be played by Rina Kawaei. Kawaei, a former member of AKB48, played Lisa in this year’s Pokemon the Movie: The Power of Us.

The film is a love story between the two characters which takes a turn when Minato loses his life at sea. When Hinako sings a song about their memories together, however, Minato reappears from the water.

Here’s how Yuasa described the film when it was unveiled last year:

Whether it’s in work or in life, we often feel like we’re “riding a wave.” The phrase “good intentions” ties into that, but waves don’t bend to our desires. We pick our wave and try to ride it. Flow with it. We don’t know if that wave is going to take us where we want to go until we’re done riding it. You can think all you want, but you won’t know until you try. In this tough world, it’s about choosing the best wave you can. I wanted to take a character who’s pure and let them surf.

An official Instagram account for the film was also launched.

Kimito Namini Noretara will be released June 21.
