Even the best in the business have to tip their hat to the competition at some point, and it’s always interesting to see what movies end up impressing fellow directors. In the case of Makoto Shinkai—who is still riding high on the success of his latest film, Weathering With You—the most recent project he found to be praiseworthy was Tatsuyuki Nagai’s Her Blue Sky.
Following Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day and The Anthem of the Heart, Her Blue Sky is the third and final installment in Nagai’s trilogy project. Here’s what Shinkai had to say about it on Twitter (via Crunchyroll):
“Director Tatsuyuki Nagai’s ‘Sora no Aosa wo Shiru hito yo.’ It was a very pleasant movie as if there must be many people who thought, ‘This is a movie only for myself.’ The three of Nagai-san, Tanaka-san, and Okada-san have clearly continued to express what only they can make. They have been my idols for 10 years since Toradora!”
Shinkai added that “Joker was amazing, too, and Ningen Shikkaku (Human Lost) was also fantastic … Every time I see something great, I’m getting nervous about what I can make next.”
