insomniacs after school

The live-action adaptation of Makoto Ojiro’s Insomniacs After School manga is set to open in Japan on June 23, so now we have another look at the feature. The full trailer has arrived along with a preview of the film’s theme song, which has singer-songwriter TOMOO performing “Yoake no Kimi he” (“To You at Dawn”), so check it out below and read on for more behind the song and film.

TOMOO:

TOMOO had the following to say about the song:

“I read the original manga avidly many times, and I wrote this song with a single-minded desire not to miss the tremors of the characters’ hearts and their gestures as much as possible, and to capture their clear and sincere feelings. I think the way people receive each other’s presence and illuminate each other is like the stars. I also think that the way people’s hearts are connected to each other is like a constellation. I hope you will come to the theater and feel the soft and warm glow!”

The film stars Nana Mori (Weathering With You) as Isaki Magari and Daiken Okudaira (Mother) as Ganta Nakami, with Chihiro Ikeda (Tokyo Rendezvous) at the helm for the United Productions project.

Insomniacs After School launched in the pages of Big Comic Spirits in 2019, and centers around two high school students who bond over their inability to sleep. Here’s how VIZ Media describes it:

Two sleepless teenagers find kinship as they escape to their school’s astronomy observatory.

Unable to sleep at night, Ganta Nakami is cranky in class and unpopular with his classmates. Nakami discovers that the observatory, once used by the defunct astronomy club, may be the perfect place for a nap—but he’s not alone. Nakami and his new friend Isaki Magari find comfort in each other while coping with insomnia.

No one goes near the astronomy tower due to dark rumors about the fate of the last astronomy club members. Nakami and his classmate Magari decide it’s their insomniacs’ sanctuary. Unfortunately, the school faculty can’t allow the unsanctioned use. But if there were a new astronomy club…
