The live-action film version of Makoto Shinkai’s 5 Centimeters Per Second has just revealed its first teaser trailer, a fresh piece of key art, and some additional cast and crew details.
The copy on the new key art above reads: “Takaki-kun, I hope we can watch the cherry blossoms together next year, too.”
The newly announced cast members are Haruto Ueda and Noa Shiroyama, who play the childhood versions of main characters Takaki Tono and Akari Shinohara. The adult Tono is played by Hokuto Matsumura of SixTONES.
The film adapts Shinaki’s 5 Centimeters Per Second anime, which was released in 2007. Gkids describes it like this:
Young love, missed connections, and unrequited feelings collide in a romance from Makoto Shinkai, the visionary director of Weathering With You and Your Name. Told in three vignettes, 5 Centimeters per Second: A Chain of Short Stories About Their Distance, explores the joys and heartache of falling in love set against the backdrop of the breathtaking visuals that define Shinkai’s work. Takaki yearns to spill his heart out for childhood crush Akari, but their families move away before any feelings can fully blossom. They stay in touch, but eventually drift apart with school and new friends to distract them. As the seasons pass, Takaki navigates his relationships while haunted by all the things he left unsaid with Akari, his first love.
The live-action version is directed by Yoshiyuki Okuyama (At The Bench) and written by Ayako Suzuki (Yukiko a.k.a.). It hits Japanese cinemas on October 10.
