If you’re watching an old anime like Ranma 1/2, the idea of a panty thief is a running gag. In real life, however, it’s pretty disgusting, and one Japanese panty thief recently succeeded in pulling off a major haul before finally being busted.
The thief in question—56-year-old Tetsuo Urata—was busy stealing women’s underwear from coin laundries in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. He was so busy, in fact, that when he was recently caught stealing underwear from a 21-year-old college student, police went on to find 730 more pieces of stolen underwear in his house.
According to Beppu City police, they haven’t confiscated this many panties “in years.” While most Japanese commenters expressed the appropriate amount of disgust over this case, one in particular nailed the psychology behind it, saying, “To us, he had too many. But to him, he probably had too few.”
このニュースを見て久しぶりに思い出しました。大学受験のために泊まっていたホテルのコインランドリーで下着を盗まれたことを。あれはほんとうにショックでした…。

It’s good that the panty thief was caught, but it’s just too bad it happened after he had already nicked such an unbelievable number of knickers.
