Most Japanese Kids Want to Be Office Workers When They Grow Up

Most Japanese Kids Want to Be Office Workers When They Grow UpIt’s not that exciting, but it pays the bills. A recent survey of young Japanese people asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?” and the number one answer for most was “kaishain,” meaning “company employee” or “office worker.” Y’know, a good old salaryman.

That was true for boys in elementary, middle and high school and for girls in middle and high school.

For elementary school boys, number two and three were YouTuber and soccer player. For elementary school girls, the number one choice was pastry chef, with office worker coming in at number four.

Why office workers? There’s speculation that because more moms and dads are at home working remotely, kids have gotten a better idea of what their parents do for work, and have decided it doesn’t look all that bad.

Move over, YouTubers: plain ol’ office workers are cool now.
