Over the weekend the anime series Japan Sinks 2020 won the Jury Award for TV Series at France’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival. This is the biggest and longest-lasting animation film festival on the globe.

Masaaki Yuasa and Science SARU were behind the 10-episode series, which streams on Netflix. It’s based on the science fiction novel Japan Sinks by Sakyo Komatsu. There’s also a compilation movie version called Nihon Chinbotsu 2020 Gekijō Henshuban: Shizumanu Kibo that has played in Japanese theaters.

The Deer King; Josee, The Tiger and the Fish; and Poupelle of Chimney Town were other anime nominated for awards at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, but these did not win.
