If the latest rumblings from Universal Pictures are any indication, it seems there’s a strong possibility we may eventually see Naoki Urasawa’s bold riff on a classic Tezuka tale come to life.
Universal Pictures, Chris Meledandri’s Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me) and Tezuka Productions are uniting to make the manga-to-film adaptation happen. The plan as of now is to turn the Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki comic into a live-action/CG hybrid.
The idea of bringing Astro Boy to the big screen again so soon may seem to bode ill of the project as a whole, but this isn’t quite the Astro-centric story Tezuka originally penned as “The Greatest Robot on Earth.”
Not sure why? Do yourself a favor and go pick up Viz’s release of Pluto in its entirety. Not only is it an excellent series, but it’ll also help you kill time between now and when we find out if this movie production is ever going to take off.
