How Studio Ghibli Helped Make Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time cell shot at Studio Ghibli

The movie Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time was done by Hideaki Anno at Studio Khara, but it turns out Studio Ghibli had some involvement. There’s a scene in the movie that they wanted to make by drawings characters by hand and then taking pictures of cels frame-by-frame. An animation shooting table is required for this work, and Studio Khara doesn’t have one.

However, Studio Ghibli does have one, and they were willing to share with the other studio. A twitter page for Studio Khara revealed this fact, and also shared a brief video showing how it works.

SoraNews24 translated some of the replies from fans after learning this fact, including the following:

“When I saw Thrice Upon a Time in the theater, I felt like there was something nostalgic about the animation in that scene. So this was the reason!”
“Shooting animation like this is pretty much a lost art nowadays.”
