It’s time to get in a wintry mood! No matter where you’re located, or how likely you are to see a white Christmas, there’s nothing like a snowy anime series to get you in the holiday spirit. We’ve picked a few winter (or winter-like) anime to get your holiday season off to a warm start. Bundle up and get watching with us!
A Place Further Than the Universe
This series may not actually take place during the holiday season, but there’s plenty of snow to go around! This science-centric anime features snowy landscapes as its heroines travel to the bottom of the world. Why? To explore, to work, or just because they want to go somewhere different.
While the first part of the series consists of getting there by boat, each episode kicks off with pretty wintry scenery. And you eventually get to see the girls down south meeting penguins and discovering the snowy world around them. It’s also a great story of friendship, family bonds, and coming of age when it feels like your whole life is plotted out for you.
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
No holiday is safe from the S.O.S. Brigade! From the eternal summer of “Endless Eight” to their time-traveling Tanabata antics, Haruhi and her gang are here to mystify any holiday season. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya sees someone creating an alternate world in the days leading up to Christmas — one where the Brigade no longer exists.
Kyon wakes up in an alternate world where Haruhi and Koizumi are missing, Mikuru has no idea who he is, and Yuki is a shy human girl. Of course, there’s an explanation to all of this. As he carefully pieces apart the puzzle, one question looms large: does he want to go back to his crazy school life with Haruhi, or is this other world what he’s always wanted?
Di Gi Charat Winter Garden
Everyone grows up sooner or later… even Di Gi Charat! The spinoff special Winter Garden takes place 10 years after we first meet the hyperactively adorable Dejiko and Puchiko. There’s no more Nyo’s and Nyu’s to be heard and no more cat ear hats. Now, 20-year-old Dejiko is finding love during the holiday season.
There’s still a little alien magic left in these former game store mascots. And that just might be enough to win over Dejiko’s new crush. While it’s a major divergence from the show we know and love, it’s a fun variation and a sweet, cozy winter romance.
