Hideaki Anno Wants to Make a Live-Action Nausicaä, Miyazaki Doesn’t

live-action nausicaä

Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki recently appeared on Fuji TV’s Bokura no Jidai talk show, and the subject of a potential live-action Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind came up during the discussion. While there are some high profile professionals who would love to helm the adaptation of Hayao Miyazaki’s landmark 1984 anime film, it’s Miyazaki himself who doesn’t want it to happen.

Among the directors who had expressed interest in a live-action Nausicaä are Takashi Yamazaki (Always: Sunset on Third Street), who had been in contact with Suzuki. Suzuki not only had to turn Yamazaki down, he also had to turn Evangelion and Shin Godzilla director Hideaki Anno away from the project.

Singer/songwriter Aimyon, who also appeared on the program with Suzuki and actor Hidetaka Yoshioka, remarked that everyone wants a live-action version. Suzuki responded succinctly and with a smile, saying, “The only person who doesn’t want to do it is Hayao Miyazaki…”

It sounds like we shouldn’t hold our breath for this one to happen, but one can dream of a Hideaki Anno directed live-action Nausicaä at the very least.
