Hayao Miyazaki Appears Beardless in Video Message

Hayao Miyazaki Appears Beardless in Video MessageNot only has Hayao Miyazaki, Japan’s most famous director, recently given up his beloved car, he also appears to have lost another Miyazaki trademark: his beard.

He recently appeared in a video message for viewers of The Boy and the Heron at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in which he thanked the festival for its Donostia Award. He also shared that he’s hard at work creating exhibitions for Ghibli Park.

And all of this sans beard!

You can see the clip for yourself below.

Miyazaki didn’t always have his trademark gray beard, of course, but he’s basically sported it from the ‘90s on, so this is quite a shock.

What inspired the legendary director to shave? What do you think of the non-bearded Miyazaki?

Beard or no beard, The Boy and the Heron has been playing to great reviews and a lot of box office bux, so congrats to the indefatigable Miyazaki. The films opens in the US December 8 courtesy GKIDS.
