Godzilla may be minus one, but he’s also plus 1.04 billion.
Godzilla Minus One, the latest Godzilla film and the first Japanese live-action production since Shin Godzilla in 2016, earned 1.06 billion yen (just under 7 million USD) in its opening weekend, which included a national holiday Friday.
That’s about 23% more than Shin Godzilla’s opening weekend. That film went on to be one of the biggest hits of 2016, alongside Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name.
Godzilla Minus One, which takes place in post-World War II Japan, stars Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe. The film is directed by Takashi Yamazaki (Parasyte).
Minus One closed the Tokyo International Film Festival November 1. Here’s how the festival describes the film:
After the war, Japan has been reduced to zero. Godzilla appears and plunges the country into a negative state. Against the most desperate situation in the history of Japan, how — and with whom —will Japan stand up to it?
The film will be released December 1 in the US with early access screenings November 29. It will have its US premiere this Friday, November 10 in Los Angeles.
