GKIDS Licenses Evangelion for Home Video, Theatrical Distribution

GKIDS Licenses Evangelion for Home Video, Theatrical DistributionNeon Genesis Evangelion, one of the most celebrated properties in anime history, has been licensed for home video and theatrical distribution by GKIDS.

The kids are set to bring the original 26 episodes, plus the films Evangelion: Death (True)² and The End of Evangelion, to Blu-ray for the first time in North America in 2021.

The Blu-ray(s) will include an “Ultimate Edition,” and the series will also be available for digital download-to-own.

There are a few pending questions:

  • Will the set include the original ADV dub and/or the newly-produced Netflix dub?
  • Will the subtitles be ADV’s original translation? The new Netflix translation? Or something else entirely?
  • Will the release include the original TV cuts and/or the director’s cuts of episodes 21-24?
  • Will GKIDS be able to get the rights to the “Fly Me to the Moon” ending theme(s)?
  • Does this mean End of Evangelion is coming to US theaters?!

We suspect the company will be answering these questions in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the announcement seems to have been timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the series: the first episode aired on October 4, 1995. We old.
