Voice actress Fairouz Ai was recently interviewed by an internet radio program from Nippon Broadcasting System about playing Jolyne Cujoh in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean.
Ai’s mom is Japanese and her dad is Egyptian. As a middle school student, she came across the comments “ora ora ora” and “muda muda muda” on a video-sharing platform. Not understanding what these meant, she looked them up and traced them to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. So then she wanted to look into the manga.
“When I checked out the illustrations of the characters, it looked really interesting, so I thought I’d go and buy it,” she said. “When I went to the bookstore, I found Stone Ocean volumes 1 to 5 on sale. That’s what I just happened to find, and since it said ‘Volume 1,’ I thought, ‘So this is the first volume of the “JoJo” series,’ and I ended up buying (Stone Ocean) Volumes 1 through 5.”
After she started reading, she had to go back and buy more volumes of the manga.
Her love of JoJo also helped lead her to sign up for voice acting school. She got to audition for Stone Ocean, and she revealed, “I was so incredibly nervous at the audition, I was tripping over my words like crazy. My hands were shaking as I held the script… I went home in tears, and (the ink) on my journal entry from that day got so blurred from my tears that I can’t even read the words now.”
Though she thought she had bombed the audition, she got called back in. It was only the anime’s staff there. She read some more lines for them, and then they announced that she would be playing Jolyne. So the JoJo fan became the JoJo professional.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean is streaming on Netflix.
