Final Evangelion Movie is Now Series’ Highest-Grossing Film Globally

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Makes 3.3 Billion Yen in First Week

According to the most recent update from Toei, the fourth and final Evangelion movie has officially soared past 7.42 billion yen in the Japanese box office. That makes Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 the highest-grossing film in the series globally, surpassing the worldwide gross of Evangelion: 3.0.

It was a close race up to the 35th day of the final Evangelion movie’s run, which brought the box office total to 7,426,243,700 yen, or about US$67,783,670. For comparison, Evangelion: 3.0‘s worldwide gross topped out at $67,282,623. During a stage event for the film over the weekend, director Hideaki Anno said, “It’s great to be able to aim for 10 billion yen at the Japanese box office in the niche field of robot anime.”

At this point, it’s possible that Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 will eventually topple Shin Godzilla, which is Anno’s current record for box office gross at 8.25 billion yen ($79 million). Anno commented on that, as well, adding, “If it exceeds (Shin Godzilla), it will be a record for me, and if it exceeds 10 billion yen, it will be good for revitalizing the animation industry.”
