Over in Japan, Shueisha and Bandai Namco Entertainment worked together to launch the One Piece Base app. Along with giving you access to the manga, the app allows you to take a picture of yourself and have it converted into One Piece mangaka Eiichiro Oda’s distinct drawing manner. This way you can look like you’re in the same world as One Piece for your profile image. But one person seems to have issue with the picture changing part, and it’s Oda himself.
ANN offered this rough translation of Oda’s comments responding to the promise that “any” picture can be changed into his style on the app: “You’re probably thinking, ‘Anything?’ I know what you’re thinking, everyone. So, I asked. ‘Can erotic photos also be converted into One Piece illustrations?’ ‘That’s restricted.’ ‘What?! Are you kidding me?!’ I just confronted the editing department!! I said, ‘I’m carrying everyone’s expectations on my shoulders!’ I lost, though.”
So, no, it technically doesn’t convert any image, and images that have a certain level of adult or hentai themes to them will not change. How adult? That part really isn’t certain. It is certain that Oda had one idea, and the powers that be in editorial had a different idea.
Still, overall Oda thought the idea was fun. . . though the app might do even better if he got his way, seeing as how sex sells.
VIZ Media publishes the original One Piece manga and gave this description for the first volume:
One Piece Plot
As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer “Red-Haired” Shanks. But his life changed when Luffy accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber…at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure…one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…
