The anime adaptation of Ryohgo Narita and Shinta Fujimoto’s Dead Mount Death Play manga recently kicked off its run, and now the manga is inspiring another piece of work. As revealed in this year’s ninth issue of Square Enix’s Young Gangan magazine, a spinoff novel is in the works for the series, with Narita writing and publication set to kick off via Square Enix’s Manga UP! site and app this May.

More details are on the way in the next issue of Young Gangan, but for now we know that the story will center on the origin of the criminal known as Solitaire.

Here’s the announcement as it appeared in the magazine:

Manabu Ono (Sword Art Online: Alicization) is directing and writing series composition for the Dead Mount Death Play anime, with Hisashi Abe (Berserk) on character designs and F.M.F on music for the GEEKTOYS production. Crunchyroll is currently streaming the anime as it airs and describes it like so:

It’s a showdown for the ages as the legendary hero takes on the corpse god necromancer, but when the dust settles, something isn’t quite right… In the final moments of their epic confrontation, the corpse god’s final gambit shot was wholly unexpected — reincarnation magic! Across space and time, a boy named Polka Shinoyama awakens feeling…not quite himself…… Who could’ve expected that the climactic battle between good and evil would turn out like this??
