You might remember the hub-bub in Japan around the release of the Dragon
Ball Z film Battle of Gods; we at OUSA of course offered you the finest in
Goku KFC coverage at the time. Months have gone by,
and the film has been on Blu-Ray in Japan for some time. As for the States… not a
word.
Certainly Funimation, DBZ‘s US releaser, re-releaser, and re-re-re-releaser into eternity,
would love to acquire the film and then release it 700 times. But, alas, we haven’t seen
such an announcement. Meanwhile, we’re lapped by the Asian release of the film, which
will be out next week with English subtitles for a much lower price than the previous
Japanese release. Asian and North American BDs are in the same region, so DBZ fans
who really can’t wait to own this film in English might want to get their fingers on the
preorder button.
Those same fans should also be advised that though its title is technically true – gods
do battle – Battle of Gods is an ensemble comedy taking place almost entirely at Bulma
Briefs’ birthday party. It is an Akira Toriyama gag reel, and that might play badly with
people who take DBZ extremely seriously. But hey, taking DBZ extremely seriously is
your own fault, right?
Anyway, Funimation better get this movie quick before people find out…
