Anime Industry Grew to Nearly 3 Trillion Yen in 2022

Anime Industry Grew to Nearly 3 Trillion Yen in 2022Every year, anime industry watchers eagerly await the release of the annual report by the Association of Japanese Animations, or AJA. It’s finally out, and while we haven’t read it cover to cover just yet, the topline numbers are certainly worth writing about.

Specifically, the overall size of the anime market in 2022 was 2.9277 trillion yen ($20.57 billion). That’s 106.8% of what it was in 2021, and the highest amount of money ever recorded for the industry. Except for a blip during that whole Covid thing, the anime industry has seen huge growth for the last decade or so: in 2013, for example, the market was worth just a measly 1.47 billion yen.

The Japan versus overseas breakdown in 2022 was roughly even, with Japan accounting for 1.468 billion and “abroad” for 14.592. Same diff, right? Again, a comparison to just a decade ago shows a huge difference, with the market outside Japan accounting for just about 20% of the market. Good job, fellow nerds.

Speaking of nerdiness: the AJA is holding a seminar in Tokyo to break down their findings on Christmas, and I’m actually thinking of attending. Hey, it’s like mass for those whose religion is Japanese cartoons, right?

What do you make of the AJA’s topline findings?
