In late October, veteran anime voice actor and director David Wald accused Crunchyroll of opening his private mail, tossing out his letters, and giving the gifts fans sent him to Crunchyroll workers. Crunchyroll responded that it was investigating the situation, and hasn’t said anything further. But Wald is still talking.
He wrote on social media, “Friends, I am not returning to #Gajeel in #FairyTail. I am not returning to the @Crunchyroll studio. Their abuses are FAR too numerous to list here. But soon, I will tell you all of them, and I will do that here: https://twitch.tv/insideroutside.”
He didn’t give an exact date or time, but added, “Stay tuned.”
Wald answered some questions from fans online, including saying, “Yes, I’m ending any professional relationship with them [Crunchyroll]. It’s possible you may hear me in other titles on their service, but those will be titles recorded at another studio. @Crunchyroll is a serious abuser, and I will no longer be one of their abused.”
Asked if the full list of abuses is available online, Wald answered, “They very soon will be.”
When a fan asked if Wald had been fired, Wald replied, “I am denying them [Crunchyroll] my services as a result of years of abusive practices and a hostile work environment.”
Without naming Crunchyroll, Wald had also written online earlier, “Me, thinking: ‘…Jeez, it’s a good thing I didn’t tell them about the gay discrimination. Or the medical discrimination. Or the union busting. Or the continuous culture of fear. Or the hostile workplace environment, or…’”
This isn’t the first time voice actors have alleged that Crunchyroll is abusive. There was Kyle McCarley, who got replaced as Mob in Mob Psycho 100 after requesting Crunchyroll partake in a good-faith conversation with the SAG-AFTRA union. There are also accusations of Crunchyroll preventing actors from getting other work.
