A Canadian man has been sentenced to 60 days in jail for watching anime pornography because it depicted the “sex organs or anal regions of characters who looked like minors,” reports Canada’s QMI Agency.
Regis Tremblay was sentenced Monday in Quebec City. Aside from serving 60 days, he will also be registered as a sex offender for 10 years.
Trembley accessed the pornography, known as “hentai” in the west, at his job as a security guard at an ammunition depot. Investigators recovered 210 files from a hard drive and 501 web addresses from Tremblay’s browser history.
Prosecutor Nathalie Leroux argued “whether it’s a cartoon image or a photograph, any representation of underage people’s genitals is illegal under the Criminal Code.”
This case isn’t the first time Canadian authorities have gone after someone for viewing hentai that depicts underage characters. In 2010, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund supported the defense of Ryan Matheson, who was arrested when entering Canada because of hentai found on his computer.
