The upcoming movie With Alice in Wonderland -Dive in Wonderland- (a.k.a. Fushigi no Kuni de Alice to -Dive in Wonderland- in Japanese) dropped a trailer that’s a bit under two minutes long. In it you can hear the movie’s theme song “Zukan” (translated as “Guidebook”) being performed by SEKAI NO OWARI.
With Alice in Wonderland -Dive in Wonderland- Trailer
The staff behind the movie referred to it as the first Alice in Wonderland anime movie adaptation to come out of Japan. However, it is not a straight-up adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s work. Instead, the main character of this story is Rise, and she finds a way into Wonderland, where she comes into contact with the famous Alice.
Here is what we know about the cast. While Rise and a couple other characters are new, it contains many of the original characters from the classic Alice in Wonderland novel:
- Nanoka Hara plays Rise
- Maika Pugh plays Alice
- Mayu Matsuoka plays The Queen of Hearts
- Kōji Yamamoto plays The Mad Hatter
- Norito Yashima plays The March Hare
- Ryūichi Kosugi plays Humpty Dumpty
- Kappei Yamaguchi plays The White Rabbit
- Toshiyuki Morikawa plays The Cheshire Cat
- Takahiro Yamamoto plays The Caterpillar
- Shōtarō Mamiya plays butler Akira Urai
- Keiko Toda plays Rise’s grandma Ayako Azumino
- Subaru Kimura plays Tweedledum
- Ayumu Murase plays Tweedledee
- Yūki Ono plays Yamane
The anime movie is being made at P.A. Works, with Toshiya Shinohara, known for working on Black Butler, A Lull in the Sea, and The aquatope on white sand, helming the project as director. The script was written by Yūko Kakihara, whose credits include Blue Box, Urusei Yatsura (the 2022 version) and, just like the director, The aquatope on white sand. The production coordinators are Shochiku and TBS.
This new take on Alice is scheduled to hit Japanese theaters on August 29.
