Another form of payment is rubbing up against adults-only content in the manga world. This time around it has to do with Manga Planet, which has announced that payment provider Stripe will no longer be allowing payments to be made on the service. This has been attributed to the R-18 (Restricted 18+) content that the service offers. At the time of this writing the account that Manga Planet has with Stripe has been both banned and suspended.
Those who subscribe to the Manga Planet pass will not be up for automatic renewal, and those dealing with the stripe ban will need to use a new payment method once their pass has expired. Manga Planet’s statement suggests switching to PayPal, and notes that there may be issues with cancellations.
This follows numerous similar situations, in which payment methods and credit card companies have declined to work with services that provide adults-only content.
American Express previously refused to work with the Japanese site DLSite, but it more generally remains accessible to these Japanese retailers being cut off by Visa and Mastercard.
Other sites that have had credit cards pulled from them include Ken Akamatsu’s Manga Library Z, Fantia, Fanza, Nico Nico, Melonbooks and Toranoana.
