Actor Garry Chalk is best-known for playing Optimus Prime in Transformers: Armada, Transformers: Cybertron, and Transformers: Energon, as well as in Beast Machines: Transformers, where he also played Optimus Primal. He was additionally Optimus Primal in Beast Wars. Right now he is in the news because he’s been diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
On December 4, Chalk shared a long message on his Facebook page about how tired he’s been and how he’s been cancelling convention appearances and cameos as a result. He promised to update people when he had a more firm diagnosis. He thanked his wife, friends, family and fans, ending the post with, “Hopefully I’ll have some good news in a few weeks . But for now?….. til all are one . Transform and roll out !!!!”
On December 20, he shared a video online where he revealed he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
The Cancer Center explains:
In stage 4 Hodgkin lymphoma, the following is true:
The cancer has spread to at least one organ outside of the lymphatic system, such as the liver, lungs or bone marrow. This is in addition to cancer in the lymph nodes.
Treatment for stage 4 Hodgkin lymphoma typically includes six to eight rounds of chemotherapy, and possibly steroids and radiation therapy.
More information was shared on YouTube, with this “Jingle Wars” Primal Parodies video Chalk co-produced. The message on YouTube explained:
[Chalk’s cancer is] very treatable and he is under the best care with the best team and his amazing wife right beside him. If you can, please spare a moment this holiday season to send him and his family positive vibes, prayers, healing, strength, light and love. The journey so far has been very emotional, but I know he will beat this. He is, otherwise, in great health which is a huge advantage for him and he’s very strong. . . . Side note: He has taken himself off Cameo until he feels better. Please refrain from asking him for videos and autographs at this time. Thank you.
