AnimEigo revealed that it’s releasing the Otaku No Video OVA on Blu-ray this October 8. Otaku No Video is — you guessed it — a parody of anime geekdom. And while it lampoons otaku themselves, it also gets in laughs involving Studio GAINAX and the people who made it.
The OVA runs at 100 minutes, and is rated 13+. It has the original Japanese audio and English subtitles. As some extras, people can check out liner notes, plus color and line art galleries. There are also live-action segments you could watch or skip over. The anime is offered in 1080p high definition.
Otaku no Video was directed by Takeshi Mori of Gunsmith Cats. Credit for character design goes to Kenichi Sonoda, who is known for working on Bubblegum Crisis. The music was composed by Kohei Tanaka, whose credits include Gunbuster.
Here is an official description for the OVA:
Otaku no Video Plot
The year is 1982 – one year into the glorious New Anime Century! Unfortunately, college freshman Ken Kubo has yet to bask in the brilliant light of this prosperous era! Instead, he’s either hitting tennis balls or playing hanky-panky with his high school sweetheart. But a chance encounter with an old friend unlocks his true anime nerd potential, turning his aim away from the ace and toward the top! With a loyal circle of new allies at his side, Kubo may just become the greatest nerd known to man – the Otaking! Meanwhile, an intrepid crew of documentarians use their filmic brushes to paint a vivid portrait of the anime obsessed.
AimEigo gave this description for itself:
Established in 1989, AnimEigo, Inc. is not only one of the first companies to release anime in the United States and Canada, but also one of the first companies to release significant numbers of high-quality Japanese live-action films. Over the last 35 years AnimEigo consistently broadened the market for Japanese films by finding audiences for entire new genres of films.
