The second season of Netflix’s live-action One Piece probably won’t be here until 2025, but Netflix was eager to let fans know who’s been cast to play members of Baroque Works. There’s also this visual with the actors next to their characters:
David Dastmalchian plays Mr. 3, Jazzara Jaslyn plays Miss Valentine, Camrus Johnson plays Mr. 5, and Daniel Lasker plays Mr. 9.
A previous video from Luffy actor Iñaki Godoy had hinted about Mr. 3 joining the series.
While American live-action adaptations of manga haven’t always done well, One Piece has been a hit on Netflix. Original creator Eiichiro Oda is involved with the production, and commented previously, “Thankfully, Netflix agreed that they wouldn’t go out with the show until I agreed it was satisfactory. I read the scripts, gave notes and acted as a guard dog to ensure the material was being adapted in the correct way.”
Oda also said, “A good live-action show doesn’t have to change the story too much. The most important thing is whether the actors can reproduce the characters in a way that will satisfy the people who read the manga. I think we did it well, so I hope audiences will accept it.”
VIZ Media publishes the One Piece manga and gave this description for the first volume:
As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer “Red-Haired” Shanks. But his life changed when Luffy accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber…at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure…one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…
