Sure, cat girls kind of corner the market in anime, but let’s not forget wolf girls. These lupine ladies are cute, loyal, and will probably rip someone’s throat out if they need to. And they have a proud history in fantasy anime… whether high fantasy, cozy fantasy, or magical girl!
Today, we’re taking a look at wolf girls past and present—their prowess and their big hearts. Who’s your favorite?
Holo
The greatest of wolf girls would never forgive us if we didn’t start this list with her! One of the two stars of beloved series Spice and Wolf, Holo the Wise Wolf spent a great deal of time as the harvest goddess of the village of Pasloe. But when she meets merchant Kraft Lawrence, she ends up following him on his travels.
Holo is a force to be reckoned with, whether in her wolf form or in conversation. She’s clever and confident, and she knows what she wants—whether that’s delicious food or the affections of Kraft. Fortunately, there’s more Holo to enjoy with this season’s new anime adaptation!
Zakuro Fujiwara
Tokyo Mew Mew doesn’t just have wolf girls… it has cat girls, porpoise girls, and lorikeet girls! The heroines of this magical girl classic fight to save our planet, aided by DNA from endangered species. In the case of Zakuro, she harnesses the powers of the gray wolf. And, while she helps the other girls out in her own way, she is a bit of a literal lone wolf.
Zakuro is talented, clever, and beautiful. And initially she has no interest in joining the team. But she still belongs on our list of loyal wolf girls because, in spite of this, she’s helpful to and beloved by the other four. (Really beloved, in the case of Minto!)
Rys
Or, if we’re using her full name, Fenrys. This wolf girl is a powerful former member of the Dark Army and a major player in this season’s Chillin’ in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers. When she’s defeated by isekai protagonist Flio (also not his real name), she swears eternal fealty to him. But he’s not exactly comfortable with being called “Master.” Fortunately, another option arises when someone mistakes them for husband and wife.
Now, Rys has thrown herself fully into the role of a doting missus: eternally faithful, an increasingly good cook, and more than willing to rip out someone’s jugular with her claws if they so much look at Flio funny. (That’s a normal wife thing, right?)
Speaking of loyal characters, this season’s anime boys are super supportive!
