Even the strongest anime protagonist needs a little back-up. And we can’t help but notice that, when it comes to our favorite anime boys so far this season, lots of them are the supportive type. Whether they’re pitching in with their brains, their brawn, or their spiritual powers, they’re giving our heroes the support they need.
Meet the guys who are giving a boost to this season’s magical girls, isekai heroes, and young protagonists. Which ones are your favorite?
Rietz Muses
As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I’ll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World is all about building the strongest possible support system for Ars Louvent. But the young noble has two secrets: he’s been reincarnated from another world, and he has a magic ability that lets him see anyone’s stats! (Except his own.) Using this keen insight, he begins assembling a powerful group of retainers—starting with Rietz Muses, one of this season’s most deadly anime boys.
Originally looked down on even by the Louvents’ servants, Rietz has a host of top-notch stats. Ars compares him to Oda Nobunaga, and it’s an apt description. Now working as something of a personal valet to the young master, Rietz has sworn to kill anyone who brings shame to Ars. And he’s not playing around.
Jiro
In the world of Tonari no Yokai-san, humans and yokai live peacefully side-by-side. That includes Jiro. This tengu, while much older than the other anime boys on this list (he’s 125), has some serious big brother energy. He looks after the village, and even serves as a sort of surrogate father figure to young human Mu-chan.
But that’s not all he does. As a protector spirit, he’s also been defending the village against less friendly otherworldly spirits. While much of the show is about everyday life for these happy neighbors, “everyday life” for Jiro sometimes means exorcising a vengeful snake demon.
Satoru Toyama
When it comes to defeating the Garugaru, the monsters of the week in Wonderful Precure!, Cure Wonderful and Cure Friendy are doing a great job. But their classmate Satoru is no slouch, either. His knowledge about animals helps guide Komugi and Iroha, both in terms of navigating pet care and when it comes to calming the wild beasts who become their unwilling foes. (Oh, and he’s got a crush on Iroha, but he’s doing a great job at keeping mostly cool about it.)
While we’re grateful for Satoru’s presence, there’s a fan theory that he’ll be following in the footsteps of one of last year’s favorite anime boys: Cure Wing of Soaring Sky! Precure. In other words, many think he (and his pet rabbit Daifuku) will join the Cure team. The human and pet do fit the profile of the show’s other two Cure pairs, and last year’s series showed that boy Cures are a thing now. Could he be getting promoted before long?
