It’s almost 20 years since manga author Karuho Shiina launched Kimi no Todoke – From Me to You, which debuted in the pages of Bessatsu Margaret in 2005 and ran until 2017 for a total of 30 volumes. Now the author is getting ready to launch a new manga titled Toppu to Beat (Blast of Wind and Beat), featuring a color opening page and a spot on the cover of Bessatsu Margaret when the April issue hits stands on March 13.
The new series finds a mysterious girl named Nike reuniting with a boy named Nemo in a small seaside Hokkaido town. Thus, an equally mysterious journey begins as Nike begins to recall the forgotten parts of herself. The series will mark the first time for Shiina to have a fully digital workflow.
The Kimi ni Todoke manga was previously adapted into two seasons of anime in 2009 and 2011, with a third currently on the way to Netflix sometime this year. Here’s how NIS America describes the adaptation:
Sawako Kuronuma has had a difficult time fitting in. Some say it’s her jet black hair, others say it’s her hushed manner of speaking, while still others claim it is due to her name’s similarity to Sadako, a character from a popular Japanese horror series. On her first day of high school, Sawako meets the one boy who treats her like a normal girl—Shota Kazehaya. Through his selfless aid, Sawako slowly learns to come out of her shell and even begins to make friends for the first time in her life. However, with a new social life come social pressures. Rumors begin to circulate about her, her friends, and even the kindhearted Kazehaya. As she grows into her new identity, Sawako must learn to deal with such pressures as well as start to understand the unfamiliar feelings inside of her, especially in regards to the boy who made her new start possible.
