The January issue of Gangan Joker magazine is already out from Square Enix, and it includes info fans of Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler would want to know. According to the magazine, creators Homura Kawamoto and Toru Naomura are taking a few months off from their manga. It doesn’t appear that they’re hurt or sick or anything, which is good. The note said the creators were stepping away briefly so they can “prepare and recharge” before getting to work on the next stage of the project. An exact return date has not been released.
The series is almost 10 years old, with the manga debuting in spring 2014. The franchise has received multiple adaptations, both anime and live-action, and has resulted in more than one spinoff manga.
The manga is being published in America by Yen Press, which gave this description for the plot:
Hyakkaou Private Academy. An institution for the privileged with a very peculiar curriculum. You see, when you’re the sons and daughters of the wealthiest of the wealthy, it’s not athletic prowess or book smarts that keep you ahead. It’s reading your opponent-the art of the deal. What better way to hone those skills than with a rigorous curriculum of gambling?
At Hyakkaou Private Academy, the winners live like kings, and the losers are put through the wringer. But when Yumeko Jabami enrolls, she’s gonna teach these kids what a high roller really looks like!
Some concerns have been expressed for the quick turnarounds expected from manga creators, who sometimes work themselves so hard it can affect their health. Rumiko Takahashi, the creator of Inuyasha, Ranma ½ and more, has shared her insane working schedule, which gives an idea of what life can be like for a professional mangaka.
