maboroshi (yes, with a lowercase m), previously known to us as Alice and Therese’s Illusory Factory, is coming to Netflix.
The film, which was released in Japanese theaters back in September, is hitting the ‘flix January 15. That’s the word from the streaming service, which also uploaded an English-subtitled trailer.
Here’s how Netflix describes maboroshi:
Trapped in a town frozen in time, life must keep going without any change. While struggling for a future, two students have their fate altered upon an encounter with a mysterious girl.

The film is the latest to be written and directed by Mari Okada (Maquia) and was animated at MAPPA. It stars Junya Enoki as Masamune Kikuiri, Reina Ueda as Mutsumi Sagami and Misaki Kuno as Itsumi.
Back in the early days of the pandemic (ugh!) Netflix released the Mari Okada-penned A Whisker Away directly to streaming after its theatrical release was scrapped. That film was helmed by Junichi Sato and Tomotaka Shibayama and animated at Studio Colorido.
