Toshio Suzuki, Studio Ghibli’s co-creator and long-time producer, now has his own traveling exhibit called the Toshio Suzuki and Ghibli Exhibition. In addition to seeing all sorts of Studio Ghibli nods (like a huge Yubaba head), it lets people get to know Suzuki.
For starters, the exhibit has recreated Suzuki’s childhood bedroom, so you can get an idea of what life was like for him when he was a kid. It includes the manga magazines he had as a kid and has held on to since then.
There is also a whole section called “What exactly does Toshio Suzuki do?” Here you can learn how involved he is at Studio Ghibli and what he brings to the table for their iconic movies.
Any bookworm would be drooling over the library in the exhibit. It’s not a lending library, but a library that literally has every book Suzuki has read, or at least close. That’s about 8,800 books! Someone asked him if it were embarrassing to show off all the books he’s read, but Suzuki replied evenly, “No, I want to show everyone the books I read to inspire them to read more.”
Right now the exhibit can be found at The Museum of Kyoto. It will stick around there till June 19. Following that it will go to Warehouse Terrada in Tokyo. If someone wants to go to the Kyoto show and they buy tickets through Seven Tickets at Seven-Eleven Japan, they can get a specialty Ghibli cloth that’s used for cleaning glasses. There’s also the possibility of buying through Lawson Tickets, and that enables the buyer to get special Ghibli candy.
Tickets have gone on sale for the Tokyo exhibit, costing 2,600 yen (about $20). If someone buys them through Lawson Tickets, they can get a hand cloth that looks like a Spirited Away bathhouse ticket.
